UFC 295 will be remembered as the most unpredictably wild UFC event of 2023. It was full of surprises and not-so-subtle hints that it should be taken with a generous serving of salt. The main card alone managed to deliver multiple finishes, including some impressive championship victories for fighters who have probably never even heard about winning a title in such esteemed company. All in all, it was quite the spectacle.
But let’s take a closer look at why this event has everyone raising their eyebrows (and maybe looking up “how to file an official complaint about referee decisions”). MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, Shaun Al-Shatti, and Jed Meshew are here to unpack what went down during Pereira’s historic light heavyweight championship knockout victory over Jiri Prochazka. They’ll be discussing the whether or not referee Marc Goddard made the correct call in stopping the fight (spoiler alert: they don’t think so), Pereira’s audacious callout of Israel Adesanya, and where Prochazka goes from here (hint: he’s probably avoiding mirrors right now).
Meanwhile, Aspinall’s quick knockout win over Sergei Pavlovich to win the interim heavyweight title in the co-main event raised some questions too—in between catching our breaths after those rapid-fire punches we barely registered on screen—who could Aspinall face next? Probably someone more durable than poor old Sergei. And hey, if you had any doubts about whether Andrade, Saint Denis and Lopes were also capable of finishing strong…well they definitely did! So much chaotic fun packed into one trip to Madison Square Garden.
