Ever looked at your Apple Watch and believed “dang, I just wish I could play the classic 1996 first-person shooter Quake on this thing!”
… No? Ok. But now you can!
Developer Tomas “MyOwnClone” Vymazal was capable to get Quake up and operating on the Watch when Vymazal notes that current open-supply mac/iOS ports helped a ton right here, clever tricks went into generating factors like the gyroscope and the digital crown perform with the almost 30-year-old game engine. Even just finding the game’s audio to play friendly with the Watch’s tiny constructed-in speaker took some workarounds.
Is it sensible? Ehhh. Is it playable? Technically!
If you are seeking to play the wonderfully hacky port for your self, Vymazal was type sufficient to place the project up on GitHub for other folks to tinker with. A handful of catches, there: you will require to compile the code your self and, mainly because Quake’s art/levels/and so forth assets are not open-supply, you will require to track down your personal copy of these as well.
Fortunately, Vymazal also uploaded a two-minute video to give you the (wonderfully ridiculous) gist of it:
