So, the interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is feeling a little miffed. I mean, he knocked out Sergei Pavlovich in just 69 seconds to win that shiny interim belt and now he’s wondering why it hasn’t been upgraded to the real deal. Can you blame him?
I can imagine old Tommy boy strutting around with his new accessory thinking “Yeah, this is it, I’m the champ now” only to be hit with the reality that he’s still playing second fiddle to Jon Jones who couldn’t make it to their scheduled fight because of an injury. Talk about bad timing.
But hey, when you deliver such an impressive knockout like Aspinall did at UFC 295, you’re entitled to feel a bit snubbed if someone else is holding onto your rightful title. And let’s face it – we all know that belts are everything in this crazy world of MMA.
In a chat with Michael Bisping on YouTube (because where else would two British blokes hash out their beef?), Aspinall made his feelings crystal clear: “I think Jon Jones should be stripped from the title … I don’t see why he’s still got it.”
That’s some good old-fashioned British bluntness right there – none of that American niceties for our Tom! But honestly can anyone fault him? If I clocked someone in under a minute and won myself an ‘interim’ championship belt as my reward, best believe I’d want the full enchilada too.
But hold up! Dana White has other ideas apparently. According to the head honcho at UFC, they’ve got plans for Jones and those haven’t budged despite Aspinall laying down some serious beatdowns in his fights lately.
