The leader of the mercenaries engaged in a rebellion against Putin has apparently had a change of heart. Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the Russian mercenary leader, has announced that his troops marching toward Moscow will turn around after talks with President Aleksandr G. Lukashenko of Belarus to “de-escalate tensions.” While it’s certainly good news that armed fighting could be avoided, let’s not forget that this is Russia we’re talking about – a country known for violating agreements left and right. So who knows what surprises they have in store for us next?
One element of this truce that many are focusing on is the redeployment of Wagner PMC forces out of Russia and Ukraine…and into Africa. Now, while this may not be great news for the people living there, from a Ukrainian perspective, getting Wagner out of their territory is definitely a win. These mercenaries proved to be more formidable opponents than even the Russians themselves! And if they really do leave Ukraine, well, that would just be another blow to Russia’s already crumbling reputation.
In fact, it seems like everything is going wrong for Putin lately. The last 24 hours have shown just how much Biden’s Ukraine strategy is working – Russia is in crisis mode over their failure in Ukraine and Putin himself is losing support both at home and abroad. It’s safe to say he hasn’t had a very good day.
But here’s the thing: this story isn’t over yet. As weak as Putin may seem right now (and trust me, he looks weaker than ever), there are still plenty more twists and turns ahead. Internal tensions within Russian society are nothing new; however,”the endgame could be beginning for the regime” according to some experts.
So stay tuned folks because things are about to get real interesting! In the meantime though…
