Grimes, the musician and singer-songwriter, has invited creators to use AI-generated versions of her voice to make new music. She even offered to provide raw audio files for this purpose. Grimes said that she is making a program that should simulate her voice well but could also upload stems and samples for people to train their own. The pop singer also stated that she would split 50% royalties on any successful AI generated song using her voice, similar to what she would do with any artist collaboration.
However, it remains unclear how profit sharing will work legally since courts have not yet weighed in on AI’s use in music. Grimes asked creators to register music with her website and fans immediately posted links to songs they’ve created featuring her vocal likeness.
Grimes appears inspired by last week’s release of “Heart on My Sleeve,” which cloned the voices of Drake and The Weeknd but was later removed from streaming platforms after copyright violations were claimed by the record label.
While Boucher or her team did not respond directly about what she might do in cases where someone might make a song with objectionable lyrics, racist or violent content; however, she addressed the issue in a subsequent tweet saying they may only take down songs with really toxic lyrics using Grime’s voice. She pleaded with creators not be “the worst” adding that political stuff should be avoided unless it’s just small memes among friends.
This is not Boucher’s first time weighing in support of AI-generated art nor is it her first attempt at creating an AI song-making project. In 2020, she worked with mood-music start-up Endel launching an app called ‘AI baby lullaby-making’ aimed at providing better sleeping conditions for son X Æ A-XII Musk whose father is Elon Musk.
Boucher believes A.I can replace humans creatively hence why we need as species discuss how involved A.I will be in art.
