Once upon a time, in the state of Arizona, there lived a young boy named Vincent Courey. Vincent was an autistic teenager who couldn’t speak, but he had his own unique way of communicating with others.
One day, on May 7th, Vincent went out for pizza at a local restaurant where his brothers worked. He watched as other people played games and tapped someone on the shoulder to get their attention. Unfortunately for Vincent, this simple gesture wouldn’t go unnoticed.
A group of customers were offended by what they saw and decided to take matters into their own hands. They cornered poor helpless Vincent and began beating him up until he was covered in welts. His parents would later find him like that when he returned home.
Vincent’s mother Debora tried to explain that her son meant no harm – tapping someone on the shoulder was just his way of communicating because he couldn’t speak like most people could. But it fell on deaf ears – they didn’t want to hear anything she had to say.
The incident left quite an impression on Michael Escobar, Vincent’s father: “My son can’t talk and they kept hitting him,” Debora said as Michael continued: “They kept hitting him…he couldn’t say stop.”
Michael called the police while still at the restaurant when he heard two sides screaming at each other – not realizing that one side consisted of them beating up his son all because they were offended by something so small.

It took some time before police finally identified one of those involved in assaulting Vincey though repercussions have been slow coming,. His perpetrator is still free despite charges having been recommended—something which encumbers Vincent’s parents from finding any solace after what happened to their child. They lament how forgiveness doesn’t mean a complete absence of accountibility, and that Vincey was defenseless against these people who outwardly feigned offence at his simple request for some attention.
In the end, while justice may still be sought for poor Vincent Courey – we can only hope that this happy ending will someday come true. And until then, kindness towards those with disabilities should always be incorporated into our actions as everyday heroes in society!
